Obituary Franklyn Augustus Butler O.B.E. 1938-2008

Following the Solemn Eucharist in Thanksgiving for his Life and Legacy held at St. Agnes Church, Baillou Hill Road on Sunday, 2nd November 2008, Franklyn Augustus Butler, O.B.E., was laid to rest in the Butler Family plot at St. Matthew’s Cemetery, Shirley & Church Streets, not far from where he was born and grew up in "the Pond” on Ernest Street.

Franklyn was born on the 24th May 1938. He was the seventh of ten children born to the late Sir Milo and Lady Caroline Butler of Ernest Street, Nassau, Bahamas. Sir Milo Butler was the first Bahamian Governor General of The Bahamas, and the founder of the family business, Milo B. Butler & Sons. Franklyn was confirmed and received his first Holy Communion at St. Matthew’s Parish Church. His Godparents were Dame Bertha Isaacs, Mr. Glass and Mr. Alfred Lightbourne.

Franklyn’s siblings include: Edna (deceased), Emmaline (deceased), Raleigh, Joseph (deceased), Juanita, Milo, Jr., Asa (deceased, Basil and Matthew.

Franklyn was joined in matrimony to Clementine Theresa (nee Carey), and together they are the parents of Jeffrey & Genia Pinder, Dominic & Tina Butler, Damian, Franklyn II, and Dennis Martin Butler.

Franklyn received his early education at Eastern Preparatory, Eastern Junior, Eastern Senior Schools and Government High School. Among his many teachers were: Mrs. Louise Bailey-Symonette, Mr. Kenneth Huyler, Mr. Cecil Bethel, Mrs. Anatol Rodgers, Miss Marjorie Davis, Mr. Arthur Barnett. Some of his former classmates include: Percy Christie (Smoky), Luther Clarke, Elswood Burrows, Creola Deveaux-Taylor, Elwood Donaldson, John Coakley, Iris Dillett-Knowles, Delores Ferguson, Janet and Henry Bostwick.

He augmented his education by attending courses at the University of the West Indies – Jamaica, Extra Mural Studies of the University of Miami, and special business courses offered by trade associations.

After completing his education at Government High School, Franklyn was employed at the Pubilc Treasury. He worked there for less than two years. However, during that short period he gained a sharpened appreciation for organization and bookkeeping. When he was not a work at the Treasury, Franklyn maintained to the greatest degree possible, his involvement in and responsibility to the family enterprise in which he was involved all his life. The call came to address greater challenges in the family enterprise resulting in his resignation from the Treasury.

Fulltime in the family business led to much assessment and reassessment and Franklyn was faced with training and educating himself, his siblings and employees.

“The greatest thing a man can do in this world is o make the possible out of the stuff that has been given to him. This is success and there is no other.” Orison Swett Marden

While pursuing and developing his family’s vision, he had to undertake planning and establishing goals. He endeavoured always to optimize balancing physical well-being, mental alertness and spiritual growth. Needless to say, he pursued with boundless passion the objective to develop and grow his family’s business.

The company started by its founder, Sir Milo B. Butler, began as a sole trader operation in 1920. This enterprise was the main source of the family’s sustenance over the years and in 1963 the company was incorporated as Milo B. Butler & Sons Co. Ltd., a registered Bahamian company.

The mantle was passed unceremoniously, but seamlessly, and Franklyn became General Manger of the business and President of the company. He assumed more of the responsibility for the day to day operation of the business and endeavoured to diversify the company and set in on sound footing for growth and continuity. In 1967, Milo B. Butler & Sons Wholesale was constructed, and within eighteen months the new Butler’s Bargain Mart. Succession planning and catching the dream are complementary and critical. Three members of the third generation Allan, son of Basil, Damian and Franklyn II, sons of Franklyn are presently engaged in the business.

“If a task has once begun, never leave it ‘til it’s done. Be the labour great or small, do it well or not at all.” Anonymous

Franklyn was a faithful member of St. Agnes Anglican Church where he served as Vestryman, People’s Warden, and Synod Representative. He was the leader of the St. Luke’s Group and also a member of the Pastoral Care and Counseling Ministry as well as the Anglican Church Men's Group. He was honoured at the Council of The Anglican Church Men’s 6th Annual Awards Banquet – A Tribute to Men, on 26th October 2007.

“The only victories worth anything are those achieved through hard work and dedication.”

Henry Ward Beecher
